16th Panzer Division
The 16th Panzer Division (16. Panzer-Division) originally the 16th Infantry Division, belonging to the peacetime army, with personnel from Westphalia and some East Prussians. As such was on the Saar front for a period and later took part in the attack on Sedan in support of armoured formations. Reorganized as the 16th Panzer Division in the late summer of 1940. First identified in action during the early weeks of the Russian campaign and then continuously engaged in the southern sector. Virtually destroyed at Stalingrad.

His strategic acumen earned him recognition, particularly during the Battle of Kiev, where his division played a pivotal role. Hube’s command highlighted his ability to adapt and excel in challenging wartime scenarios, solidifying his military reputation.
Generalleutnant Günther Angern, from 15th September 1942 to 1943

Generalleutnant Günther Angern, a German officer, commanded the 16th Panzer Division during World War II’s Battle of Stalingrad. Known for his leadership, he faced immense challenges during the siege, ultimately becoming encircled with the Sixth Army. Refusing capture, Angern tragically ended his life on February 2, 1943, amidst the battle’s devastating conclusion.

History
The 16th Panzer Division, formed in 1940 from the 16th Infantry Division, was a key German armoured unit in WWII. It participated in Operation Barbarossa, advancing through the Soviet Union’s southern sector, and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Kiev.
Trapped in Stalingrad during the Soviet offensive, the division surrendered in 1943 but was reformed later that year. It then fought in Italy, the Eastern Front, and defensive operations until its eventual surrender to Allied forces in 1945. The division’s history reflects its significant yet tumultuous role in the war.
