Here is my guide for wargaming tools an easy guide to follow part 5, part 1 (Preparing A Miniature), part 2 (Painting A Miniature), part 3 (Painting Horses), part 4 (Wargaming Materails).
I do hope that this tool guide will be of some use to a beginner and I think probably the most important thing to remember is you may already have an equivalent tool in your shed or garage, and not have to buy anything straight away e.g. Stanley knife as opposed to buying a craft knife, old breadboard instead of self-healing craft mat.
To be honest whilst doing this guide I never realised how many tools we actually use, so in some of the pictures I have not put a description for what I use it for as as it is self evident by the picture.
Clamps
Clamps for wargaming come in on many occasions as we never have enough hands here are a couple of examples that I use.
Cocktail Sticks
Cocktail sticks are a fantastic wargaming material they can be used to make snake fencing, spiky fences the list goes on and on, as well as that they also make useful tools for carefully applying small amounts of glue, paint to a model.
Compasses
Craft Knife & Cutting Mat
A craft knife and cutting mat are essential model making tools. They can be used to cut model making foam boards as well as paper and card. A craft knife should always be used with a steel ruler when cutting straight lines, ensuring that hands and fingers are kept behind the cutting edge.
Drill
Files
I use them mainly for filing the flash of metal figures
Small Wire Cutters
These are ideal for removing plastic parts from their sprues and for cutting flagpoles.
Glue Gun
I would say that the glue gun is an absolute must for any model maker.
Hammer
Humbrol Evoco Brushes
Made from natural hail, Humbrol Evoco brushes are the perfect all-round brush for many model and hobby uses, keeping their shape and quality long after their first use.
Humbrol Flat Brushes
These brushes are made from high quality soft synthetic hair, the Flat Brush pack is perfect for creating a smooth professional finish. Ideal for painting large surface areas, weathering, adding washes and helping to apply decals.
Humbrol Palpo Brushes
The Humbrol Palpo natural sable hair brushes are the ultimate modelling brush, keeping their points and shape to allow accurate and detailed painting, particularly figure work.
Humbrol Stipple Brushes
The Stipple Brushes have been designed with heavy dry brushing and weathering in mind. Made from a tough natural hair, which is perfect when adding those finishing touches to bring your models to life.
Magnifying Glass
There are several options as you can see from the above, magnifying glasses, optivisors, and ordinary non-prescription reading glasses bought from over-the-counter they come in varying strengths I use these and I would suggest that you take several figures with you when testing these reading glasses to find the ones which are most suitable for you.
Painting Palette
Pin Vice
Essential for drilling out hands and getting spears to fit well, and any other small drilling tasks.
