History


The 284th Rifle Division, formed in 1941, played a pivotal role in defending Mamayev Kurgan during the Battle of Stalingrad. Initially destroyed in the encirclement of Kiev, it was reformed in 1942 with Siberian recruits, earning the nickname “Tomsk Division.” Under Colonel Nikolai Batyuk’s command, the division showcased resilience and innovative tactics, significantly contributing to Soviet efforts.

Renowned for its sniper movement, the division fostered sharpshooters like Vasily Zaitsev, who became a symbol of Soviet resistance. After Stalingrad, it was elevated to the 79th Guards Rifle Division, continuing its service in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945.
