The 62nd Soviet Army was formed in May 1942, initially designated as the 7th Reserve Army, under Supreme Command. It was later renamed the 62nd Army in July 1942, becoming part of the Stalingrad Front. History
The 62nd Soviet Army, formed in 1942, played a pivotal role in the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. Throughout the battle, the 62nd Army faced intense urban combat, defending key areas like the Tractor Factory and Barricades. The army’s determination not only stalled the German 6th Army but also contributed significantly to the eventual Soviet counteroffensive.
After the victory at Stalingrad, the 62nd Army honoured with the Order of Lenin and transformed into the 8th Guards Army. This recognition underscored its critical contribution to one of history’s most decisive battles. Its legacy remains a symbol of courage and sacrifice.
