The 62nd Soviet Army, formed in 1942, played a pivotal role in the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. Initially part of the Stalingrad Front, its tasked with defending the city against relentless German assaults. Under General Vasily Chuikov’s leadership, the army’s resilience became legendary, holding critical positions despite overwhelming odds and severe losses.

Throughout the battle, the 62nd Army faced intense urban combat, defending key areas like the Tractor Factory and Barricades. Its soldiers displayed extraordinary bravery, often engaging in close-quarters fighting to repel German advances. The army’s determination not only stalled the German 6th Army but also contributed significantly to the eventual Soviet counteroffensive.

After the victory at Stalingrad, the 62nd Army honoured with the Order of Lenin and transformed into the 8th Guards Army. This recognition underscored its critical contribution to one of history’s most decisive battles. Its legacy remains a symbol of courage and sacrifice.
