Living History

Medieval Combat Academy

The Durham Medieval Combat Academy (DMCA) is an independent not for profit and non-professional society run by medieval combat enthusiasts and aimed at providing an environment for the learning and practice of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) as documented in manuscripts from the period of 13th – 15th century. We are located in the centre of Durham (UK).

Rosa Mundi

Rosa Mundi is one of the premier 15c re-enactment groups in the UK, bringing a style of presenting re-enactment and living history displays while fully interacting with members of the public. We display multiple aspects of 15th Century life, and specialise in the ‘Wars of the Roses’ period between 1475 and 1500. Rosa Mundi has acquired a reputation for maintaining very high standards of knowledge, costume and equipment.

68th Durham Light Infantry

We are a small group of living historians and the society’s main aim is to recreate the 68th in 1814.  We also formed a group covering the 1758-1768 period to mark the 250th anniversary of the regiment, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  As well as these periods, we also cover the SYW and WWII, portraying the life and times of a soldier on active and home service as well as showing the roles of others affected by a soldiers life, from camp followers through to normal civilians.

Vanguard

Led and founded by William Mckenzie, a seasoned re-enactor, the group ‘Vanguard’ are a North-Eastern based medieval battle re-enactment group, operating out of Hartlepool but enjoying battle events throughout the UK.

The group re-enacts the battles and combat of the medieval period, primarily taking up the arms and armour of 13th century England. However, with the group meeting and practicing every week – and due to the style of medieval weapons and armour – the group is physically equipped to adapt and enjoy participating in battle events set from early 11th century to mid-14th century.
