Having recently received my copy of The Last Argument of Kings, the 18th-century supplement to Warlord Games’ Black Powder rules. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with what the book has to offer. It provides a comprehensive overview of 18th-century warfare. That is accessible even to non-experts like myself, and it is brimming with creative gaming ideas. The rules amendments for each sub-period and army are well-conceived, though I have yet to test them in actual play. The book covers a wide range of sub-periods, ensuring that it’s not just focused on tricornes in Middle Europe.
What stands out most about The Last Argument of Kings is its ability to inspire readers with its captivating writing and superb illustrations. Some forums have mentioned potential inaccuracies in the book. But my limited knowledge of the period makes it difficult for me to judge their validity. Nevertheless, any inaccuracies do not diminish my enjoyment of the book. I am very pleased with my purchase.
I believe that people’s enjoyment of this book will largely depend on their gaming style. Aesthetic gamers who value the visual and immersive aspects of a game, as well as social fun gamers who prefer a straightforward set of rules that evoke the period’s atmosphere without excessive detail, are likely to appreciate The Last Argument of Kings. On the other hand, gamers who seek maximum realism and accuracy in their games, or those who prefer tightly regulated rules to determine outcomes, may not find it as satisfying.
